Google has never launched a high-end streaming box before. Up until now, we’ve had Chromecast dongles of varying levels of power, but nothing that would even come close to something like a Roku Ultra, Apple TV 4K, or NVIDIA Shield. Now, though, we have the Google TV Streamer, the company’s first attempt at a high-end streaming box. How does it stack up?

I’m quite used to the Roku Ultra 4K (which uses Bluetooth for earplugs), but I’m going to try this new Google streamer to see how it compares. It also uses Bluetooth for earplugs.
its bad thet this Google tv streamer has not usb port, cuz i use it for wireles keyboard connect, and i have question, can i connect my keyboard direct this new box? without bluetooth reciever inside?
Is it possible to view downloaded YouTube videos on this device when there is no internet?
It’s too expensive , with this 100$ it should be able to run mobile games with at least an average graphics settings .
I’m still sticking with my Google TV which works like a charm.
A product not many people need nowadays, especially it is a box now not a small stick.
Can this be use to Sharp Led Tv and. Turn it to Smart tv?
For me great for me i buy that soon
Nice info. However your are wrong about comparing with Apple TV 4K, this may be worth it, as ATV has no Dolby Atmos (in Netflix etc) after TVOS 17.4, till date. And as you said, this new toy supports Dolby Atmos…
Do you have to hard plug it into your router like you would a hub for your light bulbs per se? Or is it wireless connectivity to be able to use as a hub for your lights and other things that require a hub from that manufacturer?
I currently use Google Chromcast With Google TV 4K. While I like the home app intergration I want to be able to interact with it without having to use my remote just like how I interact with my Google displays. Another dealbreaker for me is you can’t talk to a person at your front door. It seems like Google forgot to put a mic in the hub.
Now we just need a Google Sound Streamer to complete the line up and to have a true hifi option. Not that I would buy it anyway since I can’t make any Google crap work !
I share a summer house with another family. Can we have two different profiles and each profile have their own (different) streaming services accounts? For example, my family our own Netflix account under our profile and the other family their own Netflix account under their profile? That way we won’t have to login and log out of every service anytime one of the two families uses it.
Man, I have been wanting tv’s to ditch os and processing altogether and just become screens. It would lower the cost a lot and customers could just pick up android, apple or possible other competitor os streaming device.
I wonder why hardware specs are so important in the Android world. Last time I used a Chromecast with Google TV it was fast enough and worked flawlessly for me. So why upgrade? Just for a bit speedier hardware?
If your device has a problem or flash is full an upgrade will be warranted, though.
Can i use this with just a projector???
No wifi 7 and it’s almost 2025
I have a Samsung S95D tv, got a couple of questions:
- what’s the advantage using this rather the Tizen OS
- if I use this will it make use of the processor on the TV to improve image quality?
- does the image quality of streaming services better/same/worse if using this rather than the apps from the tv?
Thanks
I’ll stick with my Onn Pro 4K
Is it comparable with Ring I wonder 💭
if they put in on a decent sale maybe, otherwise I’ll stick with the onn device at 50$
Google TV Streamer is using a chip from 2015…
So its already outdated.
Replaced my 1st gen chromecast stick with this. It streams audio on my excellent pixel buds pro. That alone is worth a lot. Really good product
The NVIDIA shield is 6 years old and doesn’t support AV1 and runs Android 9. It’s the Jurassic Park of streaming devices so I don’t see why, if having to choose today, anyone would still buy the NVIDIA Shield.
Apple TV better
I bought a brand new chrome cast and literally out of the box it was laggy and slow with scrolling and loading (which is was right next to the WiFi)
Power over Ethernet build in?
I’ll keep my Chromecast 4K😊
This should be $80 and no Hdmi cable 😢
