Tech in 2025: who’s in and who’s out | The Vergecast
gadgets,tech gadgets,technology,verge,the verge,tech,tech news
For the second episode in our two-part 2025 preview, Nilay and David are once again joined by Wall Street Journal columnist (and friend of The Verge) Joanna Stern to talk about what will, and won’t, happen in tech next year. This time, David joins us after a quick jaunt to the end of next year, and relays a bunch of things that happened in tech in 2025. But some of them are lies. Joanna and Nilay have to decide which things really will happen next year, and which won’t. As always, the hosts get points for good guesses and negative points for bad ones. And once we’re all in late 2025, we’ll declare a winner.

Bestisode™️ 2.0
Time travelling David from the future is dressed the same to minimize damage to the time stream. By positing it as a game, he has ingeniously divined a way of revealing future knowledge while still protecting the timeline.
This makes up for him assuming podcasts are only hosted by two people, while ignoring the myriad of solo hosted podcasts with no guests, and podcasts with 3 or more hosts. (On his episode about B2B podcasts.)
David really doesn’t try to say anything useful.
Has David ever dunked on the hoop in the background?
i had to stop watching. I got distracted by my watch.
Nilay really understands Trump like no one else in tech journalism.
The find x8 pro is the best android phone currently. But I guess it’s not sold in the US?
I’d love to get a video recapping the prediction from last year to see what was right and what was wrong and why
Obligatory david thirst comment..
I’m definitely stealing David’s new years resolution to read one page of a book a day.
I the verge needs a serious reconsideration of AI prediction. While I get it changes too quick but sometimes in such changing situation, it should be reporting and not like a supply chain prediction. David sometimes says things with conviction that it’s laughable at times. I mean he got iPad mini wrong. And my problem is Nilay plays along.
Joanna being surprised by the verge’s disclosures tells you all you need to know about the Wall Street journal’s culture (no offense to her personally).
I really miss Cranz
33:23 nice Arc Browser action there @davidpierce ❤
Im worried about pedestrians with Waymo in the city. These things will run over a body and not know to stop. Too many bikers, too many pedestrians.
I think the darkside of AI will rear it’s head by the regime in Washington next year. The word underground start become a word heard a lot in the media again. Besides the economy computer sales will slow but because average user will realize tech has reached the point of diminishing return for them and buy less. The beginning of “all in one” tech devices will begin to bring different products to market. Tech will need some “new” thing to generate sales. Online schooling will become a large business due to cuts in public education in K‑12. Next is going to be a rough ride for most people.
Joanna is great. Please hire her.
i have seen every episode of the west wing, the newsroom, and studio 60 and dont remember a single explosion… the closest thing approximating violence was elizabeth moss was kidnapped off-screen on west wing and BTW it was the worst plotline on the show.
tim apple out
I predict that paywalling laptop reviews will not work
The vergecast the podcast about everything non Apple is terrible
Joanna’s dry humor is the best 😂
How about loosing a point if you are wrong?
Apple already has a search engine, it’s called spotlight. They could turn that into full fledged perplexity any day they want. But that google money tho
Joanna, Nilay, and David have such a great dynamic—it’s like tech predictions meet a game show, and I’m here for it.
“Either things change or they don’t” thanks for the insight 😂
