What was your experience with trying to repair your own phone or a gadget?
Ensuring the screen doesn’t get damaged is not an easy job.
its just so damn unnecessary. Apple and these big companies with their control freak nature is mind boggling. its simply “gives us your money and you own NOTHING”. Then try and justify it with “we do it to protect your security and privacy”…and our security and privacy get compromised. Greed is a hella of a drug.
Even as a non Apple user, this was really interesting.
quit buying apple, bet they’ll get the picture then
Lol, why even get a iPhone.. that’s your first mistake 😅
as a phone repair professional, I can say, apple’s new approach was a huge blessing for us since they lock basically everything. but also, the price for their parts is out of reach.
Interesting video. Though you missed one point about Parts Pairing. This is specifically to prevent stolen iPhones from being used as parts as Parts Pairing prevents a unpairing of a part fr the iPhone since its marked as stolen and thus still on the Find My network (I think)
16:03 “they’re very controlling and they keep inventing reasons why its for your benefit” she summed up why I hate apple perfectly
Is this the continuation of that Vergecast episode from months ago where you guys had three broken iPhones and tried to repair them? Because if true, heck yeah! That episode ruled and this was an awesome video.
What’s happening with verge? Only 2k views in 2 hours!
need more videos like this. very informative. hope it does well
The only thing Apple fix are prices.
Apple is so anti consumer it’s comical.
Next apple move is you can put any genuine part but just have to pay for it to work with your phone. In subscription preferably (for maintaining software support)
where Luois?
Really really important video! Thank you.
Side note: Samsung is doing an absolutely mind-blowing job in repairs(atleast in my country i.e. India), you should have a look!
might be a hot take, but as someone who has DIY’ed and change screens, batteries on my older devices over the past decade, and as someone who has used 3rd party repair services, I don’t actually mind some of Apple’s measures. right to repair for 3rd party repair shops are all fine and good, but that’s assuming that all shops are scrupulous and honest. in my experience, a good amount aren’t. in the race to bottom to offer more competitive prices, plenty of repair services are selling/using lower quality parts (especially batteries). no to mention less than qualified “technician” who might mess other things up.
I’ve gotten an old phone’s battery replaced at supposedly reputable shops, but end up with only slightly better or similar battery life than my years old battery. the excuse they gave was that other aging components on the phone might cause increased battery usage, and since the phone does work, nothing i could do. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ that’s not to mention unscrupulous shops that would refurbished damaged iphones with inferior components (screens, batteries), and sell them as “like new” at high prices. I’ve had experience in this regard with an older iPhone where the battery health was indicated as 100%, but the battery life is not great, the battery health dropped 4% over 3 weeks of use, and using third party tools like coconutbattery shows the “100% health” battery has over 600 cycles and actual estimated capacity of 85% and less only. No warning that battery has been replaced in settings at all since for some older phones, there are tools that can “hack” that and even change the displayed battery health in settings.
in the end, consumers gets a poor experience, apple gets a bad rep for their phones through no fault of their own, and the only winner are the unscrupulous shops charging high prices for inferior parts.
‘a mom that wants to cut your steak for you.….. when you’re 40 years old’ 🤣😂
It really grinds my gears that people are congratulating Apple for allowing the pairing of new displays… when such pairing process shouldn’t even be necessary in the first place…
owen is my favorite verge reporter easily, always a treat when he blesses the feed
With every passing year, my nokia nostalgia only grows
Living in countries where cellphone theft is a big issue, I am kind of happy when Apple made the parts of my phone less valuable for resales.
Hope it’s not into s**t!
I’m not a fan of them, but even I understand why they are doing this.
Face ID for example could be rigged in such a way that would “authenticate” any face, and gain access to the device.
Or even from a theft standpoint, stealing, and selling for parts would even be useless for thieves.
Love Jessa’s iPad Rehab channel!
“Privacy” and “Going Green” is just marketing speak at this point.
The pairing working later might indicate that the devices phone home about these things. That opens a whole new can of worms. (as in, Apple could make it only available in certain regions or disable it later or add all kinds of anti-consumer caveats to the process)
They won’t let you repair. Their goal is to make you dump the phone and buy a new one, yet when Apple didn’t include the charger in the box for the first time they said it’s because enviromental reasons 🤡
I had 19 Apple Devices that I owned through my lifetime and most of them I had done repairs myself from parts I bought from online stores, but when my last two devices gave up on parts paining… I bid apple goodbye. Android, Windows and Linux can do the same. They dont cost 4 times as much. If they break I can easly replace them in a snap
Parts pairing while cumbersome helps prevent theft. If a someone cant sell a stolen iphone or even its parts then stealing it becomes useless…the best option becomes seeking a reward from the original owner.
no one is forcing you to use apple products. if you don’t like their practices — go to samsung or google. problem solved.
😂8plus with its 3rd battery,can’t update to iOS 18
Apple is a scummy company. Its astonishing how much they have been able to get away with and how some people still blindly support whatever marketing spin they put out
This video has a lot of misinformation, and shows a clear bias against Apple.
Thieves are much less likely to steal your iPhone when they know they can’t get anything out of it, even when parted out.
If you can’t afford to repair the device, then you can’t afford the device. Buy an Android.
I forget i can’t take my easily repairable Pixel fror granted
as for someone who had iphone stolen in the philippines id rather have my stolen iphones not used for parts lol I’m assuming that was the intent
I’ve never seen it apple 🍎 repair guy just get damaged like that
Especially the faceid, it’s broken and now I have to either get a broken iPhone to get the donor part or pay almost 300 dollars for genuine part from Apple… greedy rotten core
This was awesome!!! Owen is so personable — I love his videos. I’d like to hear more about the actual laws put in place, it’s very interesting.
This is great, thanks Apple!
We’re just gonna ignore that Riker manoeuvre huh
EU should push harder!
The only reason apple is loosening up it’s repair policies is because Europe is pushing them in that direction for environmental reasons, and they would loose even more money if they can’t sell to Europe vs forcing “authorized” repair
It’s unbelievable how Apple makes fools of its consumers and plays with legislators by juggling in their faces, without the slightest respect or concern.
How long will the government and consumers allow this?
Remember, these ridiculous anti-consumer practices are always about money.
Does parts pairing work on every iPhone with iOS 18?
Okay here is a question if i am walking someone stole my phone and sell it they can’t why because of tight integration of iOS but now someone might open it and sell it for parts but if it is serialised then it can’t be used for parts so eventually it will be not stolen because it will be useless ? Am i thinking wrong
In Thailand, there was a time when leaving your phone unattended, even for a moment, meant it would likely be stolen in seconds. Nowadays, the chances are much higher that if you accidentally leave your phone somewhere, it will still be there when you return rather than being stolen. I’m not sure if this reflects a rise in overall morality or if it’s somehow a side effect of Apple reinforcing good habits in people – so I think it’s not all that bad for their parts pairing policy.
