Happy holidays! Before we disappear into family time and catching up on our favorite shows, we have one more episode for you. And it’s 90 minutes of deep nerdery about the smart home. Every year, we try to dig into one standard or spec that has impacted our lives this year, and we couldn’t think of anything more potentially great and occasionally infuriating than Matter. Matter is supposed to be the protocol that makes the smart home work — so, uh, how’s that going? The Verge’s Jennifer Pattison Tuohy joins to discuss the state of the smart home, before we play a game to see how well we understand things. Then, Home Assistant creator Paulus Schoutsen tells us what it’s like to try and make Matter work, and where we might be headed next year.

obligatory david thirst comment
Yay! I was hoping for a spec-tacular!
peak verge content
Yes! There was no mention of this leading up to it. I was worried ya’ll had forgotten.
I am the entity now 👁️👄👁️
I sort of feel like Matter doesn’t, when I ask Google for the temp, and it starts blasting heavy metal on all my speakers, only to refuse to stop playing no matter how much I plead with it.
I just loved the letter & effort grade. I would love @verge to adopt these. 🙂
I feel so lucky that I just started setting up my smart home and all my devices are Matter
Christmas came early!!
this woman has such an elegant voice. i wish she were my mother.
so when are we getting the two hour RCS podcast?
Once again, a great holiday spec-tacular. Coincidentally this was the year I bought my first smart plug, Matter devices are becoming more affordable than mechanical timer plugs!
Omg it’s always a treat when Jennifer is on!
After looking at Jen’s desk chair the whole ep I think we need an article on what chairs the verge staff uses. I may mostly think this because my gaming chair has gotten kinda stiff and I may need to buy a non gaming desk chair soon like a real adult
Soooooo much better that the waveform podcast! ❤
Tiktik recipes are often a nightmare. Maybe we could add some genAI to convert them to both be actual recipes and taste good.
Point of note: from the perspective of computing systems, traditionally “Administrator” is considered the highest point of authority over the system. See the profession “Systems Administrator”
Home Assistant, LET’S GOOOOOO
Home Assistant Green FTW
I’ve begun making a tradition of listening to the holiday spec-taculars with a hot cup of cocoa by the fireplace on Christmas morning. I was worried there wasn’t going to be one this year, but I’m so happy it’s back!
Blockchains are a Bad Idea by James Mickens is a timeless classic I felt needed sharing.

I’m obsessed with David’s opening lines. Usually, I hear them in my car with a big ol’ smile on my face, but actually seeing him in that glorious Christmas attire is just what I need <3
Jen should be on the podcast more often.
Truly smart people refuse to have the “Internet of All Things” in their homes.
No Alexa’s, no “smart” plugs, none of that nonsense.
This was such a fun (and hilariously real) deep dive! 😂
homemade chick fila chicken nuggets:
marinate chicken cubed / chunks in pickle juice and milk
coat in salt, pepper, paprika
deep fry in oil of choice
the moment Nilay mentioned bluetooth and David immediately reacted “oh my god”
😂
Too many giggling…
Opening my garage door when I arrive home would be a huge improvement as a motorcyclist. I have to open my tank bag, rummage around to find the garage opener, then successfully press the button all while piloting the motorcycle down my HOA’s driveway.
Very much like when you relate tech products to your experiences as parents, which often doesn’t come across as well in the written coverage and in the tech industry more broadly.
I need Jen’s laugh as my notifications.
Apples mini speaker will be there sever or a screen they will make maybe even the doorbell. The first static piece of tech which you will leave in the house that you purchase will be the sever anything else connects. If you have multiple devices when the primary device turns off or fails your system should fail safe to the next unit in the house.
