As a long-time com­ic book fan, I am so thank­ful for this TV show because it final­ly gave us the “real” ver­sion of Sam Wilson.

To me, Sam Wil­son (and lat­er, Isi­ah Bradley) serve an impor­tant func­tion: they intro­duce the top­ic of racism to Cap­tain Amer­i­ca sto­ries. This has to hap­pen because you can­not talk about Amer­i­ca with­out also talk­ing about racism. The two things are linked because Amer­i­can wealthy peo­ple have been using racism to manip­u­late white peo­ple since before the Rev­o­lu­tion. It is fun­da­men­tal­ly part of the sto­ry of America.

Any­way, I liked the movie ver­sion of Sam, but found him a bit of a let­down. The clos­est those movies ever got to using the Sam char­ac­ter to talk about racism was when he briefly men­tioned the Trou­ble Man sound­track in the sec­ond Cap­tain Amer­i­ca movie.

That was­n’t enough for me.

Fal­con and the Win­ter Sol­dier had seri­ous nar­ra­tive flaws caused by the pan­dem­ic. Hon­est­ly, I think the rumored orig­i­nal plot would have been bet­ter. Any­way, what­ev­er flaws FatWS had, they final­ly got Sam Wil­son right. Racism was all over both the text and the sub­text of that show. They even intro­duced main­stream audi­ences to Isi­ah Bradley, who has much harsh­er things to say about racism than Sam Wilson.

Some­one behind the scenes must be respon­si­ble for this change in the char­ac­ter between the movies and the TV show. Who­ev­er was respon­si­ble for that, I offer my thanks as a com­ic book nerd. It final­ly felt like the source mate­r­i­al was being honored.

Sam Wil­son was my favorite incar­na­tion of Cap­tain Amer­i­ca in the com­ic books. “Bad*ss nor­mal” heroes are just inher­ent­ly more inter­est­ing in my opin­ion. I can­not wait for the next movie to come out!

One more thing: Phase 4 gets more grief than I think it deserves.

The TV shows each had their flaws, but by this point, I was get­ting burned out on the old “Mar­vel for­mu­la.” What­ev­er the shows got wrong, each of them got away from the tired old for­mu­la. Each show was dif­fer­ent from the movies and dif­fer­ent from each oth­er. This was such a breath of fresh air for me that the movies that came out dur­ing phase 4 were a dis­ap­point­ment to me because they stuck to the old for­mu­la instead of try­ing some­thing new like the movies did.

I did love the show

Two things: I want­ed to see more about Red Wings’ tech and as a black man I was total­ly fine with there not being anoth­er Cap­tain Amer­i­ca, I want­ed Cap­tain Falcon.
