Handheld gaming looks like the future — so why isn’t it more popular? The Verge’s Sean Hollister joins the show to talk about some new data about the handheld console market, what it says about the Steam Deck’s dominance, whether the Switch 2 might change everything all over again, and why Sony and Microsoft don’t appear to be in the game at all. After that, David reports on his trip to Florida to see TGL, the golf league aiming to bring the sport to new places and new fans, with the help of a truly enormous amount of technology. Finally, we answer a question on the Vergecast Hotline about iPads — and more specifically, one particularly good reason to upgrade to the Air or the Pro.

What is this?
Sean’s enthusiasm is always refreshing — so good to have him on.
Right now all I care about is The valve deckard ❤
I’d love to see yall jump on Kinda Funny podcast for an episode, you’d have a great dynamic
Luxottica is not “a pretty big firm”, it’s basically the only one 💀😂
So basically what you’re saying is Switch 2 is inevitable
I have had a Switch since like 2019. Except for business travel I never use it in handheld. I just need casual/indie games and it happens to have a sometimes-useful handheld mode. But I’m a 34 y/o accountant, not their target demo.
Turn this into aVideo Podcast too.
The moment this one went from people to a floating screensaver, my interest dropped off a cliff. Its also why I do not watch the midweek podcast as regularly as the weekend one.
Great observation about public transit and portable gaming. 21:40
I think TGL will get better with time because they will eventually get people who are playing as TGL professionals and not just piggybacking of PGA Stars. theyll really learn the ins and outs of the system and know how to tell distance from the screen.
Xbox is taking longer because they want the majority of the Xbox back catalog to be playable on the new handheld. And like you guys mentioned in the video, is it going to be Xbox OS or Windows? I think the default should be Xbox OS for Microsoft to subsidize the hardware but give people the option to install Windows for an added cost.
Until I realized that laptops have mobile class cpu and gpu (same number with a M and abysall benchmark), I too was exited when I got a laptop with hdmi/usb cables. Turns out the only reason games can run on steam deck is because nobody buys desktop so games have been targetting crappy laptops.
I’m in the camp that David brought up at 14:30. I’m really interested in a Windows/Linux handheld but the hardware just isn’t quite where I want it to be yet. I’m waiting for a Steam Deck 2 to for some of the kinks to be ironed out before jumping in. By then, Windows will hopefully have some actually decent software support and I’ll have more options to compare with as well.
please clip the part at 32:08 to 32:35 into a short
I whole heartedly agree with Sean about Steam Deck. Truthfully, you don’t really even need to have a background in Linux to use it unless you’re planning to install an emulator or mod it in some other way. The user interface imo is hard to beat. Plus, Nintendo limits you to their IP unless you modify it and you have access to such an extensive game library with Steam. I will never switch to another handheld device.
The TGL segment would be nice as a video on YouTube.
Stopped watching and thumb down at golf tournament.
god i love my steam deck so much
I didn’t buy a steam deck because I can’t use an external GPU.
Hope the next Steam deck uses AMD’s new APUs and is able to dock or use a USB connection to a GPU.
.Lost interest at AI 😂😂😂 thankfully stuck with it. For me its desktop for anything serious and other games are just casual games for the phone
Really would have been better to have video on the TGL segment. But nice job anyway.
Looking forward to seeing the switch 2 👍
That virtual golf environment sounds like a Black Mirror episode — and that’s not a good thing. If that’s the future of playing or watching sport, then include me out.
The handheld gaming chip that you’re looking for is the Apple M4 chip… ironically
PS6, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation Portable Next Gen. Steam Deck 2 if they get more games.

Great! Something not behind a paywall.
Regarding the total size of the handheld market, I think it’s extremely essential to note that we are still in Gen 1 of a weird thing that a lot of people thought would go nowhere. It’s not surprising that the windows handhelds aren’t selling because the UX is awful and steamdeck still has plenty of big holes on this front. I love them both, but anybody who’s tried to sell a friend or loved one on it knows that you kind of have to give a big list of disclaimers even now. As a result, nearly everybody usually tells me they’ll get one when they’re one iteration better.
EDIT: Eh they totally got there.
“Golf as a team sport” aka, make Golf more applicable for sports betting apps.
What a cancerous industry.
The wildcard is Switch 2 may have a great amount of power to run games like Cyberpunk, RE 4, FF7 remake or rebirth. Based on rumors.….we’ll see
Listened on Spotify. Didn’t know how soothing a 45 min handheld gaming discussion with Paul Giamatti would be. So good.
Gotta admire the marketing—making us excited to buy what we already own… again.
Steam deck is sold only through the steam not retail so those numbers are good
This video is top-notch. But you should see what’s in my nickname…
