How Apple lost control of the App Store | The Vergecast
gadgets,tech gadgets,technology,verge,the verge,tech,tech news
Everywhere you look, antitrust fights have the potential to reshape the tech industry. Nilay, David, and The Verge’s Jake Kastrenakes start by digging into the latest ruling in the Apple / Epic trial, in which a furious judge rips open the App Store in a way Apple likely never saw coming. The way we pay for apps is about to change, and fast. After that, it’s time for an update on the Google and Meta trials, as Google tries to preserve its search empire and Meta tries to make the case that basically every company on the web is its vicious competitor. Finally, in the lightning round, it’s time for another installment of Brendan Carr is a Dummy, plus some notes on this week’s Worldcoin launch and the strange new Meta AI app. Also: party speakers. Always party speakers.

36:55 Nilay is searching for “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love somebody else. Can I get an amen?” ‑Rupaul
Nilay, I have a picture of me sitting on top of my Sony gtk-xb7 circa 2017 in a college dorm that I will email you.
Amazing how this Apple App story isnt on your front page of the site.
36:53 we’re getting rupaul quotes on the cast!!
“Tim Apple is cooked” was right there. I can’t tell if I’m proud or disappointed that you left it on the table.
this is the most vergecast episode of the vergecast that has ever verged
Phil Schiler for CEO, please. He seems like one of the few remaining execs at Apple that still has what we (once) believed was the spirit of Apple. Human greed ruins everything and when they were no longer the loveable underdog who had (for many of us) a superior way of interfacing with tech, it became a millionaire-stamping factory for those execs with ungodly valuable shares and that spirit has nearly died. Maybe some humility will revive it.
Sam Altman: ‘Trust me, I just need to scan your iris to prove you’re human.’
Me: ‘Cool, and what do I get?’
Sam: ‘A crypto token, a lifetime membership to the panopticon, and the privilege of existing in Web3 without being mistaken for a toaster.
Me: Hard Pass
Legal, Apple, Gadgets… this one has it all
MORE ORBS!
@1:00:09 The Slate is basically the same size as the Maverick if the Maverick was a 2 door as well.
22:26 scary means double what it normally means in the design world, lmao.
The most ironic outcome that could possibly happen in the Google case would be if Microsoft ends up buying Chrome. Granted, I don’t think that’s going to happen because it would essentially replicate the reason Microsoft got in antitrust trouble 25 years ago.
Can you rename “Brendan Carr is a Dummy” to “Brendan Carr is a Fascist”? Because that’s what he actually is, I mean he’s both but fascism is his actual ideology and the reason why he’ll never come on the show. He’s not a capitalist, he’s not a neolib he is a fascist and that is his agenda
1:34:59 worldcoin is simple to explain — it’s beads for the natives.
Microsoft bring back windows phones
You could also make the argument that apple only applies 3 percent value to the payment and convenience of using apple for app payment and licensing.
I hope they don’t get in trouble for sending maybe classified photos. If you do this please, please make sure it’s ok
I looooooooooove Jake. just sayin.
guys please don’t forget to tip the orb delivery guy
Originally Steve Jobs wanted the iPhone to run on Web apps. It was developers that demanded an ITunes like store for apps. But later on, after the incredible success of App Store, developers started griping about the size of Apple’s cut. Which is the real issue. Not Apple’s so called monopoly. If Apple announced a 5% cut instead of 30% at the App Store launch, no one would be complaining now. Not even Epic.
Love this “Welcome to Vergecast” slogan from my friend Nilay…
Apple buys Open AI. Sam Altman becomes CEO of Apple.
EPIC fought lonely (they may be bad as well)
but many app developer wanted this apple needed to feel the heat as every other company does for such monopolistic practices they are not yet done like google and facebook
Goddamit I love this show
I love them two I be laughing so hard
I’ve often seen party speakers besides small food carts outside concerts and bars with long entry lines
When is US vs Apple trial?
If an app on my iPhone wants me to pay on a website and doesn’t give me a choice to do it in app there is no way I’m paying them. The ability to go to settings and look at all of my subscriptions and cancel them all in one place is far too valuable to me.
bringing your party speaker into the slate truck
Push this button and Nilay says I love you 6:22
Love the podcast, but the amount of ads this show gets on Youtube Music is preposterous 😂
Great episode!
I’m here for the party speaker investigations
God im so happy
These monopolists really had it coming
Where can I get the wallpaper from behind Nilay?
How many more Verge readers from the EU? Say hi! 👇
27:47 Yeah. Apple could’ve stayed greedy, just not that greedy, and things might’ve been fine. But they were consumed by greed.
46:30 baseball, huh?
There’s a guy in my city who rides around our bar scene downtown with his two party speakers towed behind him on his bike. He puts them in one of those caddies for kids. He’s out on Friday and Saturday nights in the warm months. I’ll try to snag a pic of him next weekend.
the RuPaul quote about not loving yourself means you can’t love anyone else is cracking me up.
I fully agree with Apple about in-app purchases from a privacy, fraud, and unified purchasing hub perspective. ESPECIALLY in regards to less-tech savvy, older adults. I had to uninstall no joke HUNDREDS of junk game apps from my grandma’s phone after she died. I really worry about the impact of this ruling on older adults and scams.
PLEASE DO A FEATURE ON JUBILEE!!!
Oh yeah..they are everywhere the party speakers. They even have one with party sync mode that sync multiple speakers
These are the ghetto blasters of the 2020’s
Its crazy that a judge can create rules and impose them on a trillion dollars company like this. If I was apple I would continue ignoring her, this is scary, these judges think they’re gods.
Nilay eyebrows be like

The day the app store died is the same day Tuesday’s app of the week was cancelled.
1:26:08 — I absolutely love it! I remember how fun the internet was in the 90s. I would love to go back to that except for the lack of high-speed Internet and reliable VPNs.
1:27:00 — Also, Apple brought iTunes to Windows and was able to sell iPods and later iPhones to Windows users.
My guess is that the 27% came from 30 — 3. Where the 3 is kinda, the top transaction processing charges from companies like amex.
