All Apple had to do was simply updgrade the Thunderbolt 2 ports to Thunderbolt 3 ports & call it a day.
This way at least eGPUs would be been 90% the speed to that upgraded card compared to using thunderbolt 2 etc.
They failed th3 same way they never updated the G4 Cube but cancelled those designs.

you can add a 2 TB NVME SSD but it probably was not available back in 2013
7 years later the maxed out MP i blew all my savings on still functions effortless and silently as it did on day one , its radical design much ridiculed for resembling a trash can , in my eyes represents a design classic that was never going to appeal aesthetically to the masses . And like marmite it is divisive with no middle ground only lovers and haters, now that was cool and bold of Apple back then. As for its bloated cheese grater replacement they played it safe went back in time for their future , which will doubtless please many more of their pro users. whilst i get that i still think it could have been half the size and therefore more unobtrusive as a desktop . If i get another 3 years usage from my machine i will regard the high initial outlay as good value and money well spent !
