NASA Prepares to Fly a Large Unmanned Aircraft in Public Airspace Without Chase Plane for First Time

NASA’s remotely-piloted Ikhana aircraft performs flight tests in preparation to fly in the National Airspace System without a safety chase aircraft. On June 12, 2018, NASA successfully flew the historic flight. News release:
The flight will help to move the United States one step closer to normalizing unmanned aircraft operations in the airspace used by commercial and private pilots. The Ikhana aircraft is based at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California.

ahaha theyve been flying drones all over the world into battle ahahhaa
So, they removed air to surface missiles from the drone after tasting it in Pakistan and tasting it here… exciting
Good maybe NASA will get something beneficial done with it. As apposed to the military dropping bombs on civilians with it.
What a coincidence, just this morning I was thinking to myself, “Gee, this coffee sure is good, but I bet I know what could make it better. A dash of cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and more drones that can destroy a house doing Dog knows what over my head.”.
Umanned vs remote controled. I
Huge difference.
Try autonomous. Fail.
okay, what about RQ 4 global hawk? is not large enough and doubtful that she can fly alone without safety aircraft?
So basically an oversized remote control aeroplane… The space company that tells us it’s making monumental steps into the future of technology can fly a remote control aeroplane 😂 no wonder trump took there budget away😂
Ya no aguato ya no aguanto
NASA, do you understand, and separately, do you care, that you have remained one of the very few US Government organizations that has a generally positive public image, and that flying drones (which have a rich history of blowing up weddings and hospitals) around in civilian airspace is a quick, easy way to change that?
Interestelar movie 🙂 Drone Scene! 🌌🖤
How long before you start using these to take down journalist’s drones at political protests?
Looks great and fairly impressive but you would think that the same organization that sent a glorified RC car to Mars wouldn’t have any trouble with this.
Ônibus
Maybe I’m numb in the head, but isn’t this what our airforce drones are doing overseas? I feel like the only difference is they are performing this in the US which has more air traffic than other countries.
First time, my a55. 1st time publicly, maybe.
No missile payload? 🙁
Nice 🙂 but, let us watch the saturn 5 engines fire up again pls 🙂
I can’t believe it, NASA can fly Drones!
To all the people complaining that this is just a drone, you’re missing the point of the operation. It was to develop protocol and procedures for integrating drones into civilian airspace, not the flying of the remotely operated aircraft.
Congratulations ?
LOL
i thought it will go in space …
lol…
Research flat earth and the NASA moon landing hoax. Thank you.
Very nice
