Welp, time to dust off all my ps2 games.
But you didn’t bring up how much they make off of in game sales. expansion packs, that is how they make up the cost
explain CDProject Red… $60 epic games…
some Japanese developer use a fration of the money that sony use for their games and are big, compeling and fun.
games are big enough, indi games are huge to…
the only games that could cost that much are thoes how try to mimic the movies.
Then dont buy the games and then they will drop the price it’s that simple
I’ve an idea…nobody buy for 6 months and see how fast the price drops. Why pay $70 for a game that potentially sucks?
That’s not even including game ad ons, or game pass like they do with every single game.
It’s not just video games becoming more expensive, Amazon is going full blown censorship and control freak on all Japanese anime and manga and light novels and such.
Thats what you get for playing NBA games
So are we just going to ignore that these companies make most of their profits on microtransactions. They’re good. 2k is one of the worst culprits for this.
Most games have been around $50 since the NES, with fluctuations for harder to produce software (N64) and games that required more ROM (some SNES and Genesis games), with some exceptions. In 1995, the average median income in the US was around 55,000. In 2018, it was 63,000. While prices have been severely artificially inflated, due to greedy corporations not wanting to return to pre-$4 a gallon gas prices of the early to mid 2000’s, prices have just continued to increase on most everything, while wages have remained mostly the same.
So the INFLATION argument is just pointless. In the past, when someone sad. “I paid 15 cents for gas back in my Day” they fail to mention that they made about $150 per month back then also. Today, when we say “I remember when brand new cars were 6 to 8 thousand and today, they are 22 to 25 thousand” Guess what? Back THEN, (you know, the early 2000’s), the average US family had around 60,000 or less, and in the South, many Counties, such as mine, the average family income in 34,000 a year in the early 2000’s, and today, it is around 37 or 38,000. So, while cars have quadrupled in price, and groceries have at least doubled in price overall, people are STILL making largely the same amount of money.
I’m sure many gamers are paying more than that already when publishers cut out contents of a game only to sell it as dlc contents, add it all up and if you buy on release, you’re probably paying over $100 to get the full package that should be there already, at least with many games, some at least do the right thing like CDP Red with the Witcher 3 and actually use dlc contents in the right way to actually extend the value of the game whiles also doing it at a fair price.
In any case, will the standard game prices go up? who knows but I do know one thing, it’s not gone up since 2005 and game budgets are likely going to get bigger with next gen hardware so with that, there is a fair chance they will go up but I doubt it will happen just yet, maybe a year or two down the line or maybe, they’ll get creative in finding ways to screw us over with dlc contents that should have been part of the game in the first place.
As for me, it really doesn’t change anything because I’m a PC gamer and rarely buy games on release and in most cases, only buy games with all the best dlc contents included at a fair price, so the release price of games doesn’t matter to me, I leave that up to the desperado that must play the game on release like their lives depend on it lol.
Oh nice so as someone who likes steel steelbook cases/legendary packs .…. i will not be paying 250 buck for a game and a piece of plastic. For that price the game had better wipe my butt!. I suppose this will be the time I just sell all my systems and enjoy other things.… sad to see
I seriously think only cyberpunk can deserve to be priced at 69,99…elden ring and other souls-like because souls-like are divine
I’ll stick with my pc gaming
HEHE, each 40 games you pay 400$ more, you could have instead bought a new console.
I work as an analyst in the games industry and Shawn Layden is massively misleading with his explanation of why games cost more. If a third party developer launches a game on Xbox and Playstation, they’d need to sell about 5.5million copies to make back $150million if they only sold the base $60 physical copies of the game. But they don’t, they sell special editions, collectors editions, season passes, micro transactions, merch, licensing deals, etc. which mean the number of copies needed to actually make their money back is about half of that. Then you consider that sales are now mostly digital which reduces manufacturing and shipping costs at about $4.50 per unit. And for first party games they aren’t even paying the 30% store fee because it’s their own title which is another $18 per unit…
Basically, Sony and other large publishers have been lying about the true costs because their only goal is to make more money next year than they did this year and the easiest way to do that is to increase prices, thus hurting the consumer.
You know why this is a bad idea?
1. Multiple gaming publishers have already introduced loot boxes and micro-transactions which increases the cost price of games which supersedes its relative and original value.
2. This gives publishers an extra incentive to not care about the quality for the consumer gamer, leading to worsening condition for players like multiple day one patches, mandatory online sign-in and continuous internet connection for playing, as well as lessening QA review until launch.
3. Monopolization of more gaming titles and independent studios could be a possibility, leading to more “milking” in games to accomplish quantity rather than quality.
4. Publisher executives gain more pocket money while developers themselves and game creators may not gain the same rewards themselves (depending on the company).
4. Possible decline in quality small games, due to a saturated non-competitive market.
I’m all for supporting games that deserve our money but if we standardize these game prices, and not let the developers themselves determine the price range of their games, then gamers will lose while publishers win.
Guess I’ll stick to used games.
Most casual players aren’t going to pay 70–80$ for one game, when you could get other stuff instead. This makes me want to go to pc more then before. You have to pay for subscriptions and for the console especially. No extra expenses no subscriptions just get the game you bought.
everyone ill tell yall a secret wait for a sale
easy, takes patidnce but its eorth it if you want those games but dont wanna break the bank. sooner or later the prices will drop because theyll realize not very many people are willing yo pay a arm and a leg for a game.
“GREEDY”
Join the dark side, pirate all games. Only buy when you like the game/ what the developper is doing.
I’d rather buy some psychology books for that price and learn to live a better life.
Gave it a like because it seems like you know your stuff. However I did struggle with the puns and its quite a long video too. Great knowledge though good work
$60 os now $70 or $79.99.
For crappy clonned games without DLCs.
I feel like if prices keep going up, pirating is going to become a lot more common.
This is such a naive take. OH THE BUDGET! No actually, it should be cheaper, Xbox games are cheaper and they are all good and well. PlayStation companies and Sony themselves overprice everything. If they lowered prices they’d get more sales, so I don’t know why they don’t just do that instead of scamming the people that buy
