Sony’s Mark Cerny gave a very tech-heavy presentation about the architecture of the PlayStation 5 and how developers will be able to utilize the meticulously designed console. Originally meant for the developer audience at GDC, CNET’s Jeff Bakalar breaks down the important takeaways that will result in tangible improvements to the PS5 gaming experience.

I have the same chair bro. 🙂
They Better hurry up and release them or they’ll be no one left to buy them.
I’m trying to find out what the price tag is going to be like.
I’m fully on board because you can upgrade with M.2 drives, while MS you need to pony up for their proprietary expansion. I wish they went with 1TB for the built-in though since a less savvy consumer might look at Xbox and assume slightly bigger means better.
jeffy b repping with the giant bomb shirt
Do SSDs have a long lifespan?
Nothing to see here, move along and have a nice day.
CNET.….this guy.…..Booooooooooo !!!!!!!
Great shirt Bakalar!
My biggest concern is the 60fps on all games. I know it’s up to the developers but now that the ps5 is capable of at least 1080p60 that should be the minimum for all games.
Ok what about Ray Tracing chip on xbox and the absence of it on ps5.…. which considerably would give xbox another 10 or more teraflops of power! Some reviewers mention that the entire power of xbox would be 24 or more teraflops! So what you all think about if ps5 has or would have such chip separated from the gpu..????????????
Thanks Jeff, I like these videos
Totally agree 💯 very complicated one
so far it seems an absolute disaster.
There really wasn’t anything that complicated about it. For a gdc showcase (game developer conference) you could see their focus pretty easily. I was happy to hear how they’re focusing on the future with the console so much.
At 4:02 a major error. No consumer SSD’s available today hit the 5.5Gb/s minimum spec that will be enforced by Sony on any SSD upgrades. The closest one today is a Sabrent Rocket which is over $200 for 1Tb and has a huge heatpipe cooler that won’t fit in the PS5 and maxes out at 5Gb/s so even it won’t work. Bottom line the PS5 uses a PCIe Gen 4 controller that will allow it to have forward compatibility up to 7Gb/s SSD’s with 5.5Gb/s being the minimum spec. The Xbox Series X ships with an already outdated PCIe Gen 3 controller and is already limited to 2.4Gb/s SSD bandwidth max. They will both be fast at launch. The PS5 has far more room to grow over the next 6 years.
Presentation was very tech heavy. But reminds of when they spoke about the PS4. I expect PS5 to sell for $400 — 450. I stop thinking about 2k,4k or 8k and more about frames like 60fps or more and lag time.
We should just enjoy this PS4 generation , im still enjoying my PS4 Pro a lot . They should release PS5 next year sometime .
Full compatibility or I don’t invest my hard earned money in a PS5… period!
SSD — 3D Audio — Raytracing
Sony wasn’t ready… this is what I call peer pressure…
The Xbox Series X is sitting on the other corner with a smug face 😏
The console war is about to begin… thanks to Xbox
Ps5 is a double down on ssd is both storage and ram. While the gpu has all 16 gb as vram. Basically all the ssd is swap memory.
Man I thought I was becoming a full time nerd until I heard that press conference.WTF😂 Thx👍
People complaining it was too complicated… Why isit a bad thing when people dont pander to the lowest common denominator?
Do you know why ps5 use weaker hardware(GPU) and identical with ps4 PRO(use same 36CUs count)?
The answer are for easier to backwarcompability and because PS5 initially design to compete with PROJECT SCORPIO(XBOX ONE X)
here my theory began, when Microsoft announced Project scorpio, many people think that was XBOX TWO including Sony. Because same when xbox original failed compete with PS 2, 4 years later Microsoft release Xbox 360. With incredible Specs for 2017 consoles, of course Sony also began develop their new console and want to release it in 2018. But, project Scorpio is actually Xbox one X and Microsoft success foolish Sony, also in 2018 Nvidia release RTX lineup. Then Sony wait for AMD to give them Ray tracing tech until 2020. But Sony already sign for that Specs since 2018 with amd, and Sony only want to upgrade for Ray tracing. so today PS5 Specs is actually for 2018 gaming and compete with Xbox one X.
The only reason we all got to see Cerny’s presentation was because of coronavirus.
And it’s not just about the SSD, it is also about having dedicated hardware to decompress the data stream. This is a big deal.
Sony believed in it so much they sacrificed teraflops in the APU for that dedicated controller.
I heard you in the Giant Beastcast, I honestly have to say… It doesn’t sound like you knew what you were talking about and based off this video, that was accurate.
The SSD will also help and details in smaller areas. I don’t understand why this distinction was made here. The size of the area does not matter.
Basically you can have most of your memory filled with the assets of the room your are in.
In Spider-Man you could go seamlessly from swinging around New York, crash through any window and land in a fully realized apartment.
Bakalar! ❤🎮🍻
Easy to explain…12>9…get it?
Both consoles will be awesome but 10 teraflops is a boost speed. That means majority of the time it’s gonna less. The series x is locked at 12 teraflops. We now know the rumors of it being substantially faster than the series x was referring to the speed of the storage lol. Not processing power.
Actually the most amazing thing about the presentation is that Mark Cerny was being rendered in real time on the PS5 to do the conference so that’s how the graphics are gonna look
The explanation is simple it’s called vaporware Sony does this every time anyone releases new tech for gaming like M$ just did with actually specs and HANDS on hardware Sony starts barking Sony did this with the PS2 , PS3 and PS4 and when the actual hardware/software gets released it falls well short of the specs or effects they promised. For the record I buy just about every system I have a PS4 Pro my original PS4 my launch Xbox One and my Xbox One X Project Scorpio and will buy both the Xbox Series X and the PS5 but have little faith Sony delivers what they’re promising just look at Backwards compatibility they have been promising that on every system and never delivered it either didn’t function properly or function at all .I am also really hoping the new controller doesn’t suck like the current PS4 controller. BTW I expect both consoles to cost in the $399 to $499 range
In my honest opinion, the PS5 was rushed. What’s wrong with the PS4? The PS4 is not even that old! The PS4 has been around since 2013 and 2014! And look at the PS3! The PS3 is still popular, too! The PS3 and PS4 were never rushed. In my honest opinion, Sony needs to postpone the PS5 and focus more on the PS4. Sony focused a lot more on the PS3 before the PS4 came out. The PS3 is not that old, either. The PS3 has been around since 2005, 2006 and 2007! I currently own a PS3 Super Slim and I love it!
“extremely complicated” ffs it was meant for developers
It’s interesting that this analysis completely misses talking about the custom IO complex.
Love ya Jeff, but this explanation is terrible and people should look elsewhere for an actual explanation by someone who understood more than 50% of what Cerny said.
I believe he said all PlayStation 4 games “should” play on the PS5 with the top 100 most played titles are being tested and will be “supported” on launch, with the rest to follow.
Cant help but get a jab into the series x at the end there. Pretty weak.
Dude you talk like you know more than mark cerny lol
