How do you make more food with less farmable land? It’s a tricky problem with no one obvious solution.
What will we eat in the year 2100? In this week’s Big Future, Arielle Duhaime-Ross takes a look at what we might eat in the future, and how we’ll produce it. It’s a tricky question, as new techniques and a changing climate combine to radically transform conventional agriculture. The result might look less like Soylent and more like a cricket farm.

I think soylent (or similar) could well be the future. Just because people want taste, doesn’t mean they need it; pleasure can be obtained in so many other ways haha!
Those sound effects! My face is showing a contortion of ‘ew’ and ‘aweeeesome!’
Just go vegan, problem solved
is not like after givin water to the cow the water dissapears and we are gonna run out of it if you think about it just transforms into another things but it never really leaves the planet so the same amount of water and elements has been in the world and its goona stay in here nothing is really disapearing cause you use it or can see it
so literally everyboby is made out of the same elements that were a person a dog or an animal hundreds of years ago just arranged to be you rigth now
I dont want to eat bugs. Hopefully I’ll be dead before that.
Careful, our cancers may start having cancers with this.
What about the vegetarians
I love creative video like this, likes for the animator 😀
With the amount of people that are scared to death of GMOs, I’d be surprised if this actually happened.
been eat’n bugs since preschool, bring it onnnnnn babay
Why do people think there’s a land shortage in the USA? Humans live on only about 5% of the land in the USA which can be found by a google search. A shortage of food has a lot more to do with epa regulations which are often idealistic and political than a shortage of land. There’s plenty of land for cattle and crops if they were only allowed to use it.
The problem with many bugs is that you can’t really cook em in that many ways to make em delicious.
You can basically fry them or mince them into bug paste.
(Correct me if I’m wrong)
Mince is kinda boring compared to a solid piece of meat though.
For instance, I think I’ve only seen crickets (which is the main insect type proposed for mass farming) deep fried.
And I think we want an increase in deep fried foods, if we ever want to stop the obesity epedemic.
No thank you, i rather have soylent for lunch.
So long as they prepare it in a way that it doesn’t look like bugs, I could see it catching on. As with many foods, the visual can be a turn off.
By 2100 there might be more bugs tham beef? Fucking stupid wishful thinking. Another useless “trying” to be hippy claim with no credible sources by the Verge. Nice bedtime story.
Go vegan
I designed Package product for Cultured meat: https://www.behance.net/gallery/20701845/Albert-Heijn-Cultured-Meat-(package-design)
@estelle i watched your short movie, Perfect, it was good 🙂
Or we could just all become vegetarians and cut out meat all together :l
i rather die
What about vegan? Humans don’t need any meat.
Um guys water recycles through environment so we don’t “lose” water it just gets reused into something else til someone pees it out and the earth naturally filters it back into the system
Rather like Tofurkey, a very interesting way for a Vegetarian to experience that which they detest.
Still not vegetarian food
But wat about the Big Mac gotta have my Big Mac mm
Yasss bugs! I’m craving for that!
It could have at least English subtitles. 😉 I understood half without them. :/
Crickets are the way to go!
We just need the right products that present it in a way you wouldn’t know it was bugs.
Like our protein powder made with crickets instead of whey or casein.
