NASA’s Orion spacecraft launched successfully atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket Dec. 5 at 7:05 a.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Orion’s Exploration Flight Test‑1 (EFT‑1), is the first flight test for NASA’s new deep space capsule and is a critical step on NASA’s journey to Mars. The 4.5 hour flight is scheduled to conclude with the splashdown of Orion in the Pacific Ocean.

I’d be interested to know what NASA expects to accomplish with Orion. That is, what capabilities will it have that, say, Dragon II will not? Is Orion just a leftover from the defunct Constellation program or do they have a good reason to continue developing it?
I think if they’re serious about commercial spaceflight, they should be focusing on getting the SLS into service and working with SpaceX to integrate their capsule into the NASA exploration program.
I love the website and btw GO HUBBLE
🙂 #hubbleisawesome
awesome, well done nasa
littering
more space.…but cool view
im english and support nasa so much.. cant wait the day until humans reach mars, thanks to nasa
Isn’t it high time to use SI system NASA and U.S.? Even the British doesn’t use that feet / miles anymore.
Is there any sound in space because I heard the boosters when it was still in the atmosphere but once it got out into orbit I couldn’t hear them anymore
USA
Is there a specific name/nomenclature for the booster and rocket config they are using? It seems to be to new standard, seeing as how both NASA and SpaceX use it. I just ask because it seems relatively new and I’d like a short-hand to refer to this setup for Kerbal Space Program.
Pretty cool to know my name was included in the program that sent people’s names into space on this flight. Surprised only a million or so people signed up for that. I’m hoping when I die to have my ashes sent out into deep space by the Celestis program. As close as I’ll ever get to being an astronaut.
What are the spark-like objects coming off the nozzle at 6:00?
The J2 engines are the only rocket engines to date that can be restarted in space.
Why so many conspiracists and ignorant people?
Did they take any pictures from when the spacecraft was at its apoapsis? I’m tired of seeing pictures of the earth in LEO.
Why after rocket separation (at 5:00) is everything now in a blue hue? No reason for this except unless this was staged…
Someone died @ 7:16 LOL Xd
North Korea probably claimed this was a nuclear missile…
congrats NASA you reinvented what the staturn V rocket did int he 60s
a bright future for us all.
Will or can the spacecraft dock to the ISS?
They ever think about sending parts up in sections.? Then reassembling, refueling, and making the trip, how bout inflatable habitats with inner linings formed after inflation with polyurethane
Foam between linings everything can be packaged small then pressure inflated and filled.?
Ive a question? Did any astronomers watch apollo spacecraft on their way to the moon?
This for lunar travel?
Canada was supposed to go to the moon first but some idiot prime minister shut that project down then all the people from the Canadian space project for the moon went to nasa. XD why you have to do that you stupid prime minister. Huh
