At CES, BMW rolled out US pre-orders of the i3, the company’s first mass-production electric sedan. We had a chance to take it out beyond the glitzy Las Vegas Strip for a look at what this battery-powered family hauler can do. More from The Verge:

How is it a sedan? It’s a hatchback!
Orange and black painting looks ugly.
Electric cars are totally the way forward..
I just love it!! Its so eco-friendly!!
Electricity FTW!!
Well, you do have to charge it because it works with electricity, but in short time i believe that (i dont know how to call them) “Car Chargers” will be available everywhere! Such as at the cities at the highways!!
But thats a lot of money to be spent by the gov. Here in Greece, the economic-financial system-situation is not at its best…
Maybe, at Greece it would take a little longer to install those chargers…
We shall see…
This project is still fresh!
Awesome. First time ever I’m getting excited about a car.
Charging the Tesla from a standard 120V outlet ?
and comparing it to BMW’s DC — fast charging station ?
45 mins is not bad at all, but You cannot compare a Tesla with 120 volts, if such is what is being.
Nice interior though.
The I3 is not a sedan it is a hatchback.
I3 has Battery 22 kWh battery 100 mi US$46,400 vs Model S 60 kW·h 230 mi US$66,570. Why do you think it took longer to charge? 😀 funny guy 😀
Chris Zielger this review is useless… Why dont you compare it more to tesla? and tell us some interesting thinks about I3… Mentioned stuff we can on wikipedia… All the review is like: “ok, we have this car and i want to go home so dont bother me”.
$40k for an electric hatchback?!?
I’d rather buy the Toyota equivalent for half that price, thank you very much.
Great to see another major Auto maker go EV but this is one ugly looking car.Tesla’s success is based on a lot of factors but one thing they did really well was to make a really good looking car that did not scream “I’m an EV”.Surely the shape of a car does not effect the price? In saying all this, I really do commend BMW for their efforts and hope others see this as a viable alternative to a conventional car.
Size wise, that should not cost more than $30K.
How does it make sens to measure the battery in percentages? Different cars means different batteries means different ranges. Isn’t their a universal unit we can use to define the amount of energy stored?
Not sure about your comment about comparing the charging time vs the Model S. You can’t compare a DC fast charger with a public L2 charger. If you plug the same L2 charger into the i3, you get same rate. Try comparing it with a Tesla Supercharger and the supercharger is faster hands down at 200mi of range in 30mins.
nice to see another range extender electric vehicle making it to market. I really feel like the idea of a very small gas engine to alleviate the idea of ‘range anxiety’ is a great concept, to bad Chevy did zero marketing for the Volt after it was released.…
y u have video on electric car and not talk about it’s range
But it’s a hatchback, not a sedan?
What makes this channel so great and unique is how you guys cover more than just smart phones and tablets you guys cover everything like e scooters and long boards and the new nest products
Absolutely love this channel thank you guys
It’s not really a sedan, is it? More of a hatchback/city car…
1. you cant spell letters
2. its not a sedan
I am wondering where they hired those designers? The exterior is horrible!
So now we know what we already knew about the i3…what about more impressions on how it drives and behaves on the streets?^^.
OMG its a shame the Verge! its a hatchback not sedan… damnit change this!
TV, i believe you have a mistake in your video. BMW did not in fact make the car out of carbon fiber, instead they use a plastic material that’s reinforced with carbon fiber sheets. http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_fiber_reinforced_plastic
Theres an article on it
full electric will never be widely accepted by the public. Even IF there are charging stations that are as common as gas stations, nobody has the time to sit and wait an hour to charge the battery most of the way. Hydrogen is the future not electric.
Tesla’s start at 65K.
I’m personally super excited to get an electric car as soon as they become financially viable. I’m sick to death of paying enormous amounts of money to run my car.
It’s almost like they want EVs to fail. I hear range is impractical on this again. It looks like a miniature van. EVs have to either awesome or cheep. This thing is neither.
Not quite accurate. The gas engine only charges the battery, it isn’t powerful enough to run the car after the battery has been depleted. In other words, you can’t get in and drive 1,000 miles on gas like you can with a Volt.
I like the car but I hate the back door design that forces you to always open the front door to get to the back.…bad design especially in tight places…
Range is NOT extended 100 miles by filling the tank of the extender. Under the range extender alone, the i3 gets 27 mpg and the tank holds 2 gallons.
This is a pretty bad review — and I’ve looked at a lot of i3 (and EV) reviews. I was appalled at the false comparison of charge times i3 on DC vs Tesla on CCS L2 — really? Also, in acceleration, the i3 is really, really quick, why the faint praise (0:34)? Cons vs our 2016 e‑Golf SE: i3 is very light and slightly taller, so it gets blown around by cross winds; the boot is smaller; the price is higher; the rear door is weird and impractical and the elbow room is actually less. Otherwise, it’s not a bad EV choice. Maybe it’s time for TV to take this video down?
Excellent
