Orion’s protective backshell installed on This Week @NASA

Engineers at Kennedy Space Center have finished installing the Orion spacecraft’s backshell – the black protective tiles on the cone-shaped sides of NASA’s new deep space capsule. The backshell tiles are the same type that protected the underside of space shuttles — and will not only provide protection from debris while in space but from extreme temperatures in that area of the spacecraft as it returns from space – which could exceed 31-hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Also, SLS anti-geyser testing, Webb’s replica backplane, Arctic Sea ice loss, Ancient Earth, Alien Earths and more!

Will Orion be back or white?
Quick question. The orion capsule has plating on it like that, and they mentioned it would help protect it from debris in space. Does that mean just from like, if the capsule were to end up bumping against something in space, or something like that? Or are they referring to small bits of rock and other particles floating in space? If so, is it really capable of protecting it from that kind of thing? I’m very curious, as I’m a highschool student with a future career in space related stuff planned. From what I’ve been told and read about, space debris is usually in wildly different orbits from the ship itself, and is as such usually travelling at at least one or two, potentially more, kilometers per second in comparison to the ship’s orbit. So what happens if a piece of debris, say a small stone or other very small bit of debris, hits a ship? Is the ship plated with strong enough armor to completely stop the particle, or are there other procedures in place to prevent any sort of explosive decompression or anything horrible from happening due to a piece of debris hitting the ship and (possibly) penetrating it’s externals.
Thanks for any questions anyone can supply. This is something I’ve wondered about for awhile and them mentioning the plating made me think of it again!
good

Will NASA change the design of the Orion after the tests or will they stay with the same measurements?
It’s so cool that the Orion is actually being built, I remember reading about it when it was just a concept.
That’s pretty cool. I’m just saying ionization and plasma would be a great way to shield crafts
