I would argue that French toast recipes were not about using up stale bread, but rather about stretching expensive ingredients like milk and eggs with a cheap ingredient like stale bread.

Something can be called French or Italian or whatever even though it originated somewhere else, because the food or whatever has become so associated with a different country. Is quiche French? Mais oui.
Having studied sources like Escoffier and Apicius, more traditional French food owes its roots to ancient Roman food than does the Italian food we think of. But, tell your graphics dept that is soooooooooooooo not how a scythe is used! Your historian is a good spoon carver, btw.

By the logic of saying that Lorraine was part of Germany at the time and therefore not French, Brittany in the 13th century was a duchy that, while vassaled to the French crown, was not part of France at the time.

I’m curious if anyone knows if French toast was always sweet? I live in the UK, the French toast I ate growing up (“eggy bread”) was always savoury. We served it without syrup or anything sweet on it and mostly for breakfast or lunch. I didn’t know that sweet French toast was a thing until I went to the USA for the first time.
