The Sony Xperia 1 II or the ZV‑1? If the most important thing on a new phone for you is the camera, what if you just bought a camera instead of a new phone? In this episode of Processor, Dieter Bohn compares the Sony Xperia 1 II smartphone and the Sony ZV‑1 “vlogging” camera. They’re designed for different things, but looking at them together can teach us something about how to choose our technology.

Would you buy a camera instead of a new phone?
My S8 is already on it’s last life and I want to get myself a camera as well so I’ll give the xperia a try and if I like the camera I will give their cameras a try.
Listen to the intro of this video at 0.25x speed. It’s magical!
The best camera you can have is the one you have with you at the time, and opportunity will not wait for you to get the gear you left behind because you were not planning on a photo session that day.
Some of the most iconic photos were taken with the cheapest most amateur camera produced at the time.
Maybe xperia world? Hehehehe
Say duh one more time I dare you
This is quite true, when shooting photo with my phone i actually want nearly full auto mode, but if i want to take “the” picture and i want it to be perfect, i will take my Fujifilm xe1 with mostly manual settings (thanks god Fujifilm has beautiful and useful manual dials).
”Use the best camera you have with you”. Sometimes, a shot comes up and your phone is the only one you have. It’s the one you always have.
I do miss the X1ii. I thought I would have a better experience carrying a pocket camera and an iPhone around. I do miss just pulling out the 1ii and taking nice images with it (Of course in pro mode.) When using the iPhone on days I leave the 100Vii behind, the images just don’t seem real to me. Apple over processes pictures. It’s easier and more convenient with just a phone, and if you know how to use one, grab the Xperia 1ii or the 5ii. I just feel like I’m old using an iPhone.
The reason that I’m a fan of Sony’s approach Vs Samsung’s, Google’s or Apple’s is that I want the choice to take the photo I want. I want an artistic shot with motion blur sometimes. I want to capture a bee flying without any blur at others.
Only Sony allows me to make that choice consciously while maintaining the colour grading of the scene in front of me.
Want a moody night shot? Good bloody luck on all the others, where they automatically default to “Make this look like day”.
The 1ii and the 5ii (and the upcoming 1iii, I’m sure) are creator’s devices. They’re for people who want to control what they shoot, not have that control taken from them.
I know that’s niche but why the hell shouldn’t that niche be catered to?
I shouldn’t have “the camera that’s always with me” be kneecapped by unwanted computational choices over which I have no control.
Simple, really.

That’s a good one. Nice change from the standard checklists of specs reviews. I like your comment about how your style in the art will change according to the device your using. Using Samsung and Sony myself I can attest to that. The color temp, pro vs point and shoot photography really does change between the devices and I love them both.
Best apples vs oranges vid I’ve seen yet. But bottom line, these are tools. Get the tools you need.
Come on man!! We were waiting for you to do the review on the new pixel
that wasnt what the title suggested.
thanks
before i watch the rest of this video…what did you shoot this video with!?
What video equipment/camera/recorder did you use for the main video? (not the demonstration of the phone or the camera)
The camera industry no longer has a future imo ! Maybe only in the field of full format or larger. The telephoto lenses in smartphones are getting bigger, better and more refined! Theoretically, telephoto lenses with 350 qmm sensors are possible! One uses e.g. angle prisms, tubes and folds. You could, for example, optically connect several sensors (like James Webb) and use the whole width (width x height) and part of the depth of a smartphone. For an S22 Ultra, that would be 70 × 5 mm. So a telephoto lens sensor of 350 qmm! That would be about APS‑C format. And because of the much larger mass production, the price of the smartphone would be lower than an APS‑C cam.
DSLM are good for Wildlife/Sports/Underwater/Corporate etc. where special (zoom) lenses or good bodies are required. For everything else, especially if you aren’t a professional photographer a smartphone is the way to go in 2022. It’s much better for reportage/street/portrait/photojournalism/documentary.
Great video, love the comparison. I wonder if you can compare iPhone 14 image quality with a vlog camera about the same price 3 years ago?
