Apol­lo 13 lunar mod­ule pilot Fred Haise, Jr, 76, was orig­i­nal­ly slat­ed to become the sixth man to walk on the Moon in April 1970. Instead he con­sid­ers him­self for­tu­nate to have sur­vived that ill-fat­ed mis­sion, earn­ing the dis­tinc­tion of hav­ing cir­cled behind the Moon and imme­di­ate­ly returned to Earth. From his home­town of Biloxi, Haise received NASA’s Ambas­sador of Explo­ration Award dur­ing a cer­e­mo­ny Dec. 2 at the Goren­flo Ele­men­tary School.
