NASA ANNOUNCES ROBUST MULTI-YEAR MARS PROGRAM; NEW ROVER TO CLOSE OUT DECADE OF NEW MISSIONS
ARC,GrunsfeldMars,NASATV
Building on the success of Curiosity’s Red Planet landing, NASA announced plans for a robust multi-year Mars program, including a new robotic science rover set to launch in 2020. The plan to design and build a new Mars robotic science rover brings a total of seven NASA missions operating or being planned to study and explore our Earth-like neighbor.
The 2020 mission will constitute another step toward being responsive to high-priority science goals and the president’s challenge of sending humans to Mars orbit in the 2030s. The future rover development and design will be based on the Mars Science Laboratory architecture that successfully carried the Curiosity rover to the Martian surface this summer. This next rover mission ensures America remains the world leader in the exploration of the Red Planet, while taking another significant step toward sending humans there in the 2030s.

Why don’t we just go to mars in 2020?
Very true. Mars could contain things we could never think of. Yet I would like to see some more adventurous missions. Thumbs up if you agree.
Also, why waste millions of dollars on this if humans are going 3 years after?
Why send a big fallible accident-prone human out there to do the work that a highly capable self-contained mobile science lab can do at a tenth of the cost?
Mars landings: another NASA PsyOp
they are aware and want to do that, but it isn’t in the budget
nothing is in the budget anymore
Why not just send Humans in 2020?
2020? Things are moving REALLY slow…
In all honesty NASA deserves about 10% of all our tax dollars, NOT the less than 1% they receive now. We can’t hang out on this mud ball forever…
The thing is, sending a single human being would cost ten times more. To acclimate all the current technology for a planet with the conditions as Mars will take a lot of time to develop. I am one of those volunteers and I believe it can be possible but not by 2020.
Who is the person who talks in that video? I would know his name and position at NASA. Only for information purpose
Ok, I’ve already found his name. John Grunsfeld. May be helpfull for other people. Thanks
I presume it’s because it can get down to 143C on Mars.
look up Mars One. they’re a dutch non profit.. but they have a full plan for putting man on mars by 2023. very cool.
Mars One has a plan for it. they want to place a settlement on Mars by that time. it’s completely feasible. it takes 7 months to travel to mars.
Maybe if they make the rover have a drivers seat, when the settlers get there they already have transportation?
WHY DO I READ COMMENTS THEY UPSET ME SO MUCH
A new MSL in 2020.… xD What a disappointment. What about a return sample. with the new rocket Falcon Heavy.
The thing is. If we want to do science, a rover will do just as well.
The only reason why we’d send people there right now, would be simply for proof of concept.
Volunteers, there are many, but it’s not about wanting to go, it’s about taking the huge responsability, knowing what you are doing, and the intense training.
Sending humans to mars will be a great achievement, as was going to the moon.
But, if it’s only for science, we can stay with the rovers.
in the description it says 2030. But hey, in the 70’s they said we’d go in 2010.
Sincerely, we have the technology to go there and come back since the 80s, we just don’t do it, because it’s expensive.
There still would be alot of people wanting to go…
There sending another rover to do a COSMIC ROBOT WARS!
Thats kind of disappointing, I was hoping to hear about sending a man to mars… isn’t this going to be the 7 or 8th rover now..?
I don’t know what to say with out sounding over exuberant,.. It’s just really disappointing there not sending a man to Mars sooner..
YiiiiHaaa !!
I know what you mean and it’s not ment personally, but it is not expensive. War is way more expensive, so is the corruption of the capitalistic system, and the exploration of the origin of life and the universe is the most important thing there is. Amen. 😉 We are not a planetary people yet and still too geocentric to experience astronomy as a #1 priority imo. Apparently our curiosity is something luxurious and only something which can be dealt with after we’ve solved basic problems we’r having.
I agree.
But I was saying it, Nasa has a budget, and they can’t overpass it, unfortunatly.
Yes, sadly so.
that’s the point. they want them to settle on mars. provide them with everything they need to harvest food and live there. eventually, if he experiment proves successful, the settlers could build their own rocket with materials and leave at will if they wanted. To some people, this concept may seem crazy, but it’s the principle. we need to keep pushing for the stars. constantly. Space is the final frontier.
2020 2030& How about 2060 or 3125? =)
US officials now ned analog lunar program of end 60‑s.
NASA HIRES engineers, astronomers, physicists, and mathematicians that have PhDs … you know… from the evil defense industry.
i want to go to mars…
I highly respect NASA and everything they do, but I have to ask a question. Why are we sending imperial probe driods to distant planets when we haven’t even explored the deep of our own ocean? I’m sure it would help to have a comprehensive understanding of our own planet to compare to other planets.
@MrRob8254: It would be exciting to send humans at first, but consider the big picture. It takes 6 months to get to Mars. Whoever signs up for that, better be trained and tested to psycologically handle a small space for the length of time. Plus, if you get homesick, you have no option. If you freak out, you’d be a danger to everyone there.
