Ford Hands Over ISS Command to Hadfield

The reins of the International Space Station were passed from Expedition 34 Commander Kevin Ford of NASA to Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency during a ceremony on the orbital outpost on March 13. Ford and Flight Engineers Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin arrived at the station on October 25 and will make a parachute-assisted landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan on March 15 in their Soyuz TMA-06M spacecraft. Hadfield, who became the first Canadian commander of the orbital laboratory, NASA Flight Engineer Tom Marshburn and Russian Flight Engineer Roman Romanenko will be joined on March 29 by Expedition 35/36 crew members Pavel Vinogradov, NASA Flight Engineer Chris Cassidy and Flight Engineer Alexander Misurkin.

Even though this is years old, I’m revisiting them all because Chris Hadfield’s command was such a joy to watch at the time. It still brings a bit of a lump to my throat when they play the Canadian anthem, because even when floating in space Hadfield still made sure he ‘stood’ for the anthem and ‘sat’ back down after and it still makes me smile!

Today I learned Hadfield is from Canada, not USA
It’s weird that even in space they tend to take a seating position. I wonder why that is. Just out of habit? Or because humans have a tendency to take a fetal position?

I miss seeing Hadfield’s pictures all the time. He was GREAT at his job.
