India vs England TEST 5: Jasprit Bumrah leads India. Rohit Sharma ruled after testing positive for Covid
Rohit Sharma will MISS 5TH TEST: Jasprit Bumrah becomes the first fast bowler in 35 years to lead the Indian Test team in the rescheduled ‘Fifth Test’.
Regular captain Rohit Sharma was banned from the game.
The last Pacer captain India had was the great Kapil Dev. Kapil was relieved of his captaincy in 1987. Since then, India has never had a speed dealer to lead the team in traditional cricket.
Bumrah will become the 36th cricketer to lead India in the longest format since the country first played in 1932. The Gujarat pacer, who has 123 wickets in 29 Tests, has emerged as one of the top fast bowlers in the world.
The head of the selectors, Chetan Sharma, had previously said he was being trained as a future leader.
Cheteshwar Pujara or Hanuma Vihari opens with Shubman Gill
With the experienced Rohit from the playing XI, the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara has a good chance of opening the batting with the young Shubman Gill.
The source said that Mayank Agarwal has just been released as a ‘cover’ and is not in the scheme of things as far as playing the eleven.
“Mayak is only here as a cover. It is likely the Pujara-Gill combination that will open up the batting. There is a chance for outside Hanuma Vihari to open as he did the work in Australia during the 2018 series in a stop-gap arrangement. But the chances of Pujara opening are much greater.” he said.
It is understood that the specialized batters in the setup will be Pujara, Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Vihari and Rishabh Pant.
The only other contentious issue is whether to play a fourth fast bowling all-rounder in Shardul Thakur or a second spinner alongside Ravindra Jadeja in Ravichandran Ashwin.
Along with Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami automatically select each other.
