Rohit Shar­ma will lead India: The selec­tors have decid­ed to announce a dif­fer­ent squad for the first T20I. They have rest­ed the Test stars apart from Rohit Shar­ma who will miss the Test match.

The squad fea­tured in the Ire­land T20I series was retained, with Rohit being appoint­ed captain.

The full strength squad will also play the last two T20Is and the three ODIs.

Rohit Shar­ma will MISS 5TH TEST: Jasprit Bum­rah becomes the first fast bowler in 35 years to lead the Indi­an Test team in the resched­uled ‘Fifth Test’.

Reg­u­lar cap­tain Rohit Shar­ma was banned from the game.

The last Pac­er cap­tain India had was the great Kapil Dev. Kapil was relieved of his cap­tain­cy in 1987. Since then, India has nev­er had a speed deal­er to lead the team in tra­di­tion­al cricket.

Bum­rah will become the 36th crick­eter to lead India in the longest for­mat since the coun­try first played in 1932. The Gujarat pac­er, who has 123 wick­ets in 29 Tests, has emerged as one of the top fast bowlers in the world.

The head of the selec­tors, Chetan Shar­ma, had pre­vi­ous­ly said he was being trained as a future leader.

Chetesh­war Pujara or Hanu­ma Vihari opens with Shub­man Gill

With the expe­ri­enced Rohit from the play­ing XI, the expe­ri­enced Chetesh­war Pujara has a good chance of open­ing the bat­ting with the young Shub­man Gill.

The source said that Mayank Agar­w­al has just been released as a ‘cov­er’ and is not in the scheme of things as far as play­ing the eleven.

“Mayak is only here as a cov­er. It is like­ly the Pujara-Gill com­bi­na­tion that will open up the bat­ting. There is a chance for out­side Hanu­ma Vihari to open as he did the work in Aus­tralia dur­ing the 2018 series in a stop-gap arrange­ment. But the chances of Pujara open­ing are much greater.” he said.

It is under­stood that the spe­cial­ized bat­ters in the set­up will be Pujara, Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Vihari and Rishabh Pant.

The only oth­er con­tentious issue is whether to play a fourth fast bowl­ing all-rounder in Shardul Thakur or a sec­ond spin­ner along­side Ravin­dra Jade­ja in Ravichan­dran Ashwin.

Along with Bum­rah, Mohammed Sir­aj and Mohammed Sha­mi auto­mat­i­cal­ly select each other.
