Bobby Deol, Kajol and Manisha Koirala Starrer gup turns 25 today. The Rajiv Rai director hit the screens on this very day two and a half decades ago. People still remember Gupt for his peak and of course his music.
A song featuring Bobby Deol dancing in an all-black outfit at a disco became quite fashionable back then. Yes, we are talking about the popular dance track “Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela” sung by Udit Narayan and composed by Viju Shah.
Deol shared some behind-the-scenes anecdotes with Bollywood Hungama while reminiscing about how he would spend the whole day rehearsing for this act, so much so that his pants got sweaty.
“It’s one of my big hits and Viju Shah’s best album to date. I wish I could have worked more with Rajiv Rai after this film. But for some reason things made him leave his country and go away. I remember when I was shooting the song “Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela” it was only recorded at Mehboob studio. I remember dancing with Chinni Prakash ji and meri pata hai kya haalat hoti thi unn dino, main itni probe karta tha ki meri pant bheeng jaati thi sweat se, jaise kisi ne paani phenka ho (I used to rehearse this song so much that by the end of the day my pants were soaked with sweat like someone had spilled some water on them). I just wanted to do my best. It was a great song. I even remember the way Rajiv promoted the film, the day the songs were supposed to be released, all day the channels just played Gupt’s soundtrack,” the actor said.
Here’s another interesting little thing about Gupt: Kajol, who was one of the leading female actresses at the time, was the first actress to be nominated in the villain category at the Filmfare Awards, which she ended up winning!
